CASTEL DE SABARTES
Baix Penedes Carles Sumarroca is a farmer who, in his own words, "accidentally became an industrialist". He has pioneered sustainable farming techniques and champions viticultural diversity with his vineyards of the world project and his extensive nurseries. Sourced from the vineyards of two estates in the northernmost part of Penedes, the sea-level vineyard of Sabartés is windswept with high concentrations of limestone and clay. Hot, dry summers and cool, wet fall and winter weather are typical for this region. ZURI TXAKOLINA
Getaraiko Txakolina Harvested from coastal Hondarribia, the birthplace of Txakolina grapes and home to the Rekalde brothers who followed their father's passion and planted new vineyards in the hills of this scenic and forgotten border town by the sea. LUIS ALEGRE
Rioja Alavesa Bodega founded in 1968 by Don Luis Alegre, the circular winery was built into the side of a hill to allow gravity to move the wines with minimal pumping. They are known for dry farming, their use of native yeast and sustainability. 90% of their production is estate grown on their 133 acres- very rare in Rioja. 14th century Chateau in Rioja Alta Half an hour out west of Haro, the hamlet of Cuzcurrita de Rio Tiron approaches the limit of D.O.C.A. La Rioja. Family business purchased the 14th century castle and its tiny walled vineyard in the late 90's and hired winemaker Ana Martin to build a gravity fed winery in the highest elevation in Rioja Alta. "rad spirit" Montsant The R.O.Q Corporation [Republic of Quibia] was launched by winemakers on the island of Mallorca who decided they wanted to make great wines from old bush vines that had captured their heart in continental Spain- this is their first project. The vineyards are in Cornudella de Monstand, the highest and coolest subregion of Monstant. The soil here is covered with red clay strewn with llicorella (slate) and codolls (round river stones).
